In less than a year, those who want to board a flight or enter some federal buildings will be required to present a REAL ID.

Starting on May 3, 2023, passengers will be required to have the new enhanced ID.

The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005, which put new minimum security standards in place for state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards.

The original deadline to have a REAL ID was set for 2016 but it was delayed several times, most recently in April of 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Only 43% of state driver's licenses and IDs are currently compliant with the act. In 2020, only 83 million Americans would have been able to go through security at airports if the REAL ID requirements were in place at the time.
