The 'Red and Black' has released three issues so far this school year covering news, opinion, sports and much more at Sunnyside High School. It's the first print edition of the paper since 2013.
'The Red and Black is Back!' adorned the front page of the first edition of Sunnyside High's student newspaper of the 2021-22 school year.
That it's back is due to the determination and hard work of Haley Rodriguez and other students who are aspiring journalists, love to write, want to let people know what's going on or any number of motivations.
"When COVID-19 hit there were many events that students knew little about and with permission from the principal I started the 'Red and Black' virtually," said Rodriguez.
When schools returned to in-person for this school year, she said she wanted it to be a physical paper and through a partnership with the Sunnyside Sun, copies of the 'Red and Black' can now be found throughout the school, published once a month.
"I underestimated how excited staff and admin would be about the return of the paper," said Newspaper Advisor Tyler Rablin. "I think a lot of it is that, while we always know the events happening, we don't always get to see pictures of our students doing well and hear them share their experiences from the activities they do."
He noted the administration has been supportive, even when the students write editorials on what could be considered sensitive topics.
